I reenacted the MMX (Martian moon explorer) mission. Couldn't plan a departure burn while on the ground. Launches from KSC come with a lot of inclination. I had to eyeball the Earth-Mars phase angle for the transfer and when to lift off from Earth to get into an orbit from which I can get a nice prograde departure from Earth. My solution worked, but it wasn't great.
How about dummy orbits which the transfer planner can use to compute a departure? Other ideas?
