In KSP there were specific habitat modules for specif tasks (livng quaters, lab module). With the new Part-Subpart-System you could make habitats were you can customize the internal layout.

Instead of having a modules for each task you have common shells, basically the pressure vessel with wimdows and hatches. These pressure vessels would come in the same sizes as normal fuel tanks. You would then add task specific subparts to the inside.
This would allow players to desing their Indicidual modules. Also you could make each subpart be its own science experiment instead of having a generic "lab module". you could also mix between crew living and work/science. For example in shells with multiple levels you cold dedicate one level to crew living and the other on to science., like how it was done on the Skylab space station.

A moldular system like this can also be expanded by modders. With life support mods you could have subparts for oxigen generation, CO2 removal, waste management, food production and storage...

real world example:

space station startup VAST is working on a single module space station called Haven 1. Their modular space station Haven 2 will use steched modules based on Haven 1 with some additonal barrel sections. Alll Haven 2 modules are the same pressure vessel with diffrent internals to serve the needs of the station.
The modules of the ISS US-Segment are also just simlar cylinders with diffrent lengths

subpart design and rack system:

the subparts could be based on the Inernational Standard Paylod Rack (ISPR) system used on the ISS. Were each module has a "Rack Frame" subpart that can hold a certin mumber of Racks. A system could also be implemented that would allow the player to move Racks from one module to another in space, like how its done on the ISS. You could for example bring up a new experiment Rack you just researched to you space station with a cargo vehicle (basically a module prressure vessel with englnes and solar panels).
