Forums v1.10.0 — Push Notifications, Bigger Attachments, Faster Pages

A forum update went out today.

Push Notifications​

You can now get your alerts as notifications on your desktop or phone, so you don't need the forums open to know someone replied to you. The banner at the bottom of the page asking to enable push notifications is how you turn it on, and if you've already clicked it, you're set. If you dismissed it or chose Never ask again, you can still turn it on from Preferences: scroll down to Push notifications and hit Enable push notifications. Either way, your browser will ask for permission once.

A couple of things worth knowing:

• It's per device. If you want it on your laptop and your phone, turn it on in both.
• It uses the alert settings you already have, and you can switch off individual types on that same page if some get noisy.
• On an iPhone or iPad, Safari only sends notifications for sites you've added to your Home Screen. Do that first (Share, then Add to Home Screen) and open the forums from the icon.
• If you log out on a device, push switches off there until you turn it back on.

Bigger Attachments​

Once again, you can attach files up to 25 MB. WebP images work now too.

Faster Pages​

Pages load faster now. We turned on PHP's opcache, which keeps the forum's compiled code in memory instead of rebuilding it for every page.

Oh thank goodness file sizes are bumped up again.

And push notifications! I will definitely be seeing how those work out. Blow up my phone, everyone.

Should you find some of the notifications too noisy, check out the Alert Preferences and set some custom options.
