East soldiers (and maybe other AIs) see farther than players

Horizontally, it seems the East soldiers have the same view range as players, however it seems that vertically they have a lot more view range.
I assume their view range check is square whereas the players have a rectangular view range.

I don't know if everyone has the same view range but I can see 14 tiles west and east from my character, but only 8 tiles north and south.

This is quite annoying as it makes north-south fighting very enemy sided as they constantly spot & shoot you out of range, and if you shoot back they go prone so you won't hit any shots.

Dean said that the AI has less view range than players and that it isn't square, but as a player I almost always get spotted & engaged when the enemy is north/south of me and out of my view range, even when I am not shooting at them or doing anything that would cause me to be spotted.
But when I am west/east of them this doesn't happen.

What you are seeing is "ineffective shots". The commander may order other units to fire "in your direction". The server would crash if the NPCs could "see' beyond their values - because a buffer is made with the maximum distance, and beyond that it would overflow memory and corrupt the game causing a hard-crash of the server.
