Ahwoo Griefing Report Thread.

Getting griefed sucks, especially when you've put time into a round. I get why you'd want somewhere to call it out.

The problem with reports like this is that collecting evidence only helps after the damage is done, no matter whether it ends up in a public thread or somewhere only moderators can see. It's like an ambulance at the bottom of the hill, and we'd rather build a safety barrier at the top so fewer people get hurt in the first place.

It also means someone has to judge a round in context from a clip, and from the outside, a lot of griefing looks like an accident.

@Rocket has killed me a bunch of times by accident while trying to rescue me. Clip any of those moments and they look like a griefer. If that's then reported and a moderator makes an incorrect call - you've then punished someone for an accident and probably created an unnecessarily anti-social relationship.

Considering all this, Ahwoo is building an account standing system that rewards players for positively interacting with each other. As @Rocket wrote in the Announcements channel in the RocketWerkz Discord - "healthy communities are made by communities, not by policing the community."

So if someone is being a menace, call it out in the round, where everyone can see what's going on, and the other person can explain themselves or knock it off. Slurs and the like are a different matter, and people dodging chat filters will be removed.

We're still working out what the standing system should consider and reward, so if you've got thoughts on that, throw them in here!

I think the main griefing related problems are just due to how powerful explosives are as well as multi-Z and fire spread.

Any large hold has to construct a walled armory and aggressively store any littered loose ammo in it because of how easily a burning zombie/xeno can turn into an explosive chain reaction. Very often the ammo dump will still cook off anyway and kill half the server.

Multi-Z is also very trollish right now because its very easy to blow out floors even by accident, and in certain lighting or lag conditions it can be very easy to fall down a Z level by accident, this will most likely be a game ender since you are now isolated from your team with a broken leg, most likely surrounded by a horde, and must somehow make it to a ladder which could be on the opposite side of the map or even nonexistent since the upper side of the ladder can be blocked or destroyed by explosions easily as before.

Explosions also have really bad concussion effects from a long distance that make you combat ineffective due to continuously dropping your gun and passing out.

I would personally suggest:
  • decrease fire spread % chance per tile/person, especially if its just a smooth metal or concrete floor.
  • make concussion/brain damage gradually cure itself at a reasonable rate.
  • add a short delay (1s) with a sound cue (scrambling footsteps or something) before your character walks off a cliff. This way people can still choose to do so if they want, but if you didn't intend to, you have a moment to walk any other direction to cancel it.
