(This is a copy of this thread on the Discord suggestions forum.)
I know there's already cat name suggestion threads. This is a separate suggestion.
With RimWorld's supporter edition, users can submit a custom character name (such as themselves) to add to the game, kind of easter-egg-like. I think it would be a neat incentive to contribute if contributors could do the same but for cat names.
## Submission Guidelines (Potential Choices):
1. Simple Cat Names: Simple, (semi-)common, and believable cat names in a standard sentence case format, such as "Hunter", "Nina", or "Rocket".
2. Extended Cat Names: Potentially less common or strange names, likely including shortening of peoples' usernames, but still kept somewhat consistent with their formatting, such as "Heightmare", "TimberFox", or "Adsii".
3. Usernames: Any formatting goes, including "tomservo", "linuxgurugamer", or "SPAMSPAMSPAM".
> In my opinion: #1 is the best choice. #2 would be tolerable, but may detract from gameplay slightly. #3 would be ridiculous. With either #2 or #3, I'd suggest implementing an option in the game to disable contributor names to not detract from the gameplay and just use a default set of names.
## Implementation Requirements:
1. A SQL database or similar. I don't believe it needs to be pivotable or particularly high-performance, so pretty much anything should be fine.
2. A Discord bot for users to interact with to make their submission, check the status of it, and potentially re-submit/edit their submission.
## Pros:
1. Incentive to contribute, and a reward for doing so.
2. Contributions are already linked to our Discord accounts so verifying contributions with submissions is trivial.
3. No web-development or Google Forms required. Submissions could be handled simply with a Discord bot.
4. The workload for screening is minimal (currently) and not urgent.
## Cons:
1. Requires development in the form of a Discord bot, a method for moderating submissions, and a method of pulling approved submissions into a file of sorts to update a (contributor) cat names file in KSA.
2. Submissions require manual screening for adherence to guidelines and offensive content.
3. With guideline options #2 or #3, not only may it be distracting to see unusual/ridiculous names, but players who haven't contributed may feel bad seeing other contributors' names in-game. "Ugh, my cat is named SolarSupremacy. That guy's a tool."
## My Offer Of Assistance:
1. I understand the development time may be more than you guys are willing to put in right now. I'm a developer and have experience with making Discord bots. This bot wouldn't require anything I haven't handled before. I'm willing to volunteer some of my free time to do this, or if requested, to provide my two cents on how I'd recommend setting up the database and the logic behind the whole process. There's one suggestion I'll make here though: I believe it would be more respectful to the contributor to allow the moderators of submissions to add a reason for denied submissions and provide that reason to the contributor as part of a status check / update on their submission, as well as allowing them to edit/resubmit their submission if their original wasn't intentionally offensive/obscene.
2. The screening process will require upkeep. I've done similar work for other communities in the past and am willing to volunteer handling it. I do believe the process could easily be handled by one person (especially with an elegant UI of sorts for moderating submissions). There would initially be a big wave of submissions but after the backlog is handled, there should only be a couple dozen per day (based on my brief eyeballing of the #contributions channel).
