This does seem to match my experience. Forums stay logged in forever, but I can open the game download three nights in a row on the same browser/computer and have to re-log each time.

It most likely is the GPU. They've been tricky since the start, see this post. There's been other blurbs from devs about the AMD 5000/6000 cards having issues. It seems like if you wait long enough and the game doesn't crash then it may still work. If it does crash and it isn't VRAM related...
