Players probably would like to implement custom changes for having multiple playable species.

Throwing ideas for one of them. It would be some little delightful androids.

Something near to one of these two :

They implement a gameplay concept : auto-replication or Von Neuman galactic expansion.

When you want to colonise a new planet or solar system with newly created kerbals, you need to bring them from Kerbin.

With these robots, you can directly build factories capable of producing playable characters into your new world and facilitate your expansion.

You harvest local ressources to build the body parts.

Also, a mysterious ancient artifact will be needed for bringing life to your character.

Monolith from No man's sky.

In this gameplay you have ancient globe hidden on planets. It is the source of all life.

You will need them for completing your robots. These globes are placed on monolith and each one of them tell the story of the universe.

Probes, scanners, telescopes can locate them. Those artefacts encourage you to explore the outer space in details.

Could serve as an interesting mod concept. I see potential in the idea of needing discoveries to increase potential crew like collecting science to unlock new technology.

But for the sake of the game's identity and design cohesion I think strictly sticking to the kittens is necessary. There's been a lot of work on those models and their infrastructure specifically, and no telling however much work would have to be done to translate it to other characters especially the more visually different they are.
