This is more of a feature request than bug report, still both. I'm trying to consolidate issues that pop up here and there in context of running on Wayland, but also may be relevant for X and any tiling WMs.Current situation with window management and metadata, and possible solutions:
- Main KSA window does not have app-id (or WM_CLASS on X).
- Set app-id of all windows to "ksa", or any desktop entry basename conforming value (looking into more distant future where desktop entry will also be shipped).
- Child windows lack both app-id and title.
- See above for app-id.
- Tags (xdg_toplevel_tag_v1) may also be used to identify windows and target them in Compositor's rules, like "ksa main window", "ksa context menu", "ksa tooltip", "ksa camera view", etc.
- Predictable tags would make possible creating rules to float and place windows at mouse position from Compositor's side.
- Child windows do not declare main window as parent (Compositor will not apply appropriate behaviors, i.e. proper z-order, mandatory floating) .
- Declare parent.
- Optionally set max size (this will also make most tiling compositors float these windows).
- Main window does not seem to declare its intended size in first commit (Compositor does not know how to size it, so it will come out wrong).
- Declare proper window size in first commit.
- Window does not expect being resized. Mouse input and UI placement breaks when window size is changed externally.
- Compositor has final say in window geometry, unless client declared set_max_size and/or set_min_size, so either:
- Handle resizes gracefully and dynamically adapt content to new size
- Declare max and min size to tell compositor to not resize it (tiling compositors will also float). Good interim solution if handling resizes is too expensive for now.
- Compositor has final say in window geometry, unless client declared set_max_size and/or set_min_size, so either:
- Only native screen resolution is available as possible size even in windowed mode.
- Offer some presets that fit into native screen resolution for windowed mode (and fullscreen also, because modern fullscreen mode on Wayland, and X, handles interpolation transparently).
