My thoughts on KSA so far

Here are my current thoughts on kitten space agency after briefly playing the public pre-alpha (which I was VERY excited about):

  • I am on linux (arch) and disappointed I have to run it under wine (or I suppose proton)
  • I didn't enjoy it very much
  • It looks GREAT
  • It runs TERRIBLY
  • I cant load in the full solar system for whatever reason but I can load earth and the moon, which runs at about 20-30fps and I have a feeling is eating up my RAM because whenever I try more than 2K textures or something it just won't let it load even just the earth in the same way it refuses to not crash when loading the entire solar system
Anyway, I am still intrigued into this game and will continue to play the public early builds, but I was generally quite disappointed with the game in its current state.

I think that some things it did quite well were graphics (so I think all the texture art and also the shader work blackrack is doing is absolutely heading in the right direction, as well as mostly liking the UI (although it could be lessened as it is a bit overpowering)) and I kind of like how you get more control on your orientation rather than kerbal space program's basic direction holds.

Some key bad things are lack of linux builds, performance issues, being unable to load the solar system, the graphics levels not seeming to change much at all, the very weird rcs controls which seem to be slightly unresponsive in manual mode, and also the painfully slow rotation which is so slow I actually have to timewarp just to rotate

In short I am very disappointed and unsatisfied but highly respect the work of rocketwerkz on this game and all the effort put into it is outstanding, its just lacking support and some other things that make me very sad to have been held back by but I am excited for the future of this game and I hope it doesn't turn out like ksp2!

I don't actually think that making the game run natively on linux is that important as there are several ways to play Windows games on Linux already. People started making guides on it within like the first hour of KSA becoming public. What they could do instead is make an automated install script that for example installs KSA through Lutris or something similar.
I also think that it's sort of expected that you didn't enjoy playing it as there is literally no game present, but that was the point of this release. It's just an alpha release, they are testing out how it runs on different systems, fixing bugs and getting some feedback on some of the main features before they start adding major things to it.

thanks for replying!

I agree that I think I might have sounded a bit harsh and I want you to know that I am still very excited for the game and can't wait for the next update, the reason I say 'didnt enjoy it' and was 'very disappointed and unsatisfied' is because it was running very badly (and I realise now that no linux builds isn't actually that bad so that is not my main concern at all) and I just wish that they could make it able to run on less performant hardware like they claimed it could, and I also found some other aspects of the game impacted by performance which made me annoyed (like rcs controls being delayed, although that might just be the game and in that case I very much hope they change it) but again I still will be playing the next public build and if they can optimise the game enough that I can play it like I can kerbal space program with most of the main visual mods installed then I will be more than happy and to me the game will be a huge success!
